Romance at Work Companies warn employees against romances at work due to concerns about productivity decline, favoritism and sexual harassment charges. The Society of Human Resource Management recent study showed that 27 percent of U.S. companies have "written or widely understood policies" about dating co-workers. Only 7 percent of these companies ban dating among employees-though it’s not clear how they enforce it. (8/2000: Howard Parker – Helpline) Other Society of Human Resource Management (SHRM) Findings: According to respondents from organizations that discourage or do not permit office romances, reasons for such policy varied:
Despite concerns about the consequences of office romances, only 12 percent said their organizations train supervisors on how to properly manage workplace romances. When asked if employers should have the right to prohibit workplace romances, 14 percent said yes, 28 percent said no and 54 percent said it depends on the situation. For Survey Results: Cupid's Arrows Sometimes Compete with Work Objectives: SHRM Survey finds Office Romances are often frowned upon by Employers
Business Week - 1998: Sex on the Job- The Lewinsky Effect After the Lewinsky scandal, however, it's a safe bet that more companies will make new rules. So what's the best policy?
